New PlayStation 3 Model: Hit Or Miss?

A couple of days ago, Sony unveiled its new PlayStation console. Or rather, a new update to it. The new PlayStation 3 is slimmer, sleeker, and lighter than ever before. This bad boy is given a boost from its seemingly minute capacity of 160GB and 320GB hard drive, it is now packing either the already big 250GB or the insane 500GB hard disk drive. A white version is said to be released in Japan and other regions afterwards according to Sony. No word yet on a white version for North America. Along with that, cheaper models with a 12GB flash storage will be released in different parts of Europe and Hong Kong. Again, it isn’t hinted whether this will appear in the North American Market. It will be available to the public on September 25th, Tuesday with a price tag of $269.99. Let’s talk about what little new features it has and it’s pricing.

The first PlayStation 3 came out back in 2006, with its distinctive bulky and clunky outer features and the notable Spider-Man 3 like font “PlayStation 3″ right smack dab on the middle of the console. Offering high definition graphics and new generation gameplay, online content with the introduction of the PlayStation Network,  and its use of the Blu-Ray Disc. Priced at $500 to $600 for a 20Gb or 60Gb, respectively. 3 years later, Sony came up with a slimmer and lighter model. More commonly known as the PS3 Slim, it packed a much higher capacity for its hard disk drive, a more elegant “PS3″ logo,  and dropped its previous 4 USB 2.0 ports down to 2.

Given another 3 years, what does Sony decide to do? Make another slim model. But wait, this time they made it slimmer. I can imagine the big guys talking about what to do with their product. This is what they came up with. Announced at 2012 Tokyo Game Show, this new model can easily be deduced as a filler model. Everyone knows Sony’s got their brains on for the PS4. No dates or any other information for that matter on when we will be able to get one. Anyway, not much has changed with its features. You’ll be able to change the default HDD to a custom 2.5 inch drive.

As I said earlier, two models will be released under this new “slimmer” model. One is the 250GB model that will be sold for $249.99 on September 25th. A bundle will be available for $269.99 that comes along with the Game of the Year edition of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The other model however, the 500Gb one, you won’t be able to get your hands on that for a bit of while. It will be released to the public on the 30th of October. The 500GB PS3 will set you back about $299.99. These new models consist of two high-speed USB 2.0 ports. It will have Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, Ethernet and HDMI.

Our buddies at IGN Entertainment got an early look at the new model. Listen to what they have to say:

Personally, I won’t be spending money on this bad boy. Only because I’ve already set my eyes for the current slim. It basically has the same features and it costs the same. My main issue was that Sony didn’t drop its prices for their current models. Usually they’ll cut $50 to $60 when something new comes out, but no. They’ve decided to keep the price tag as it is for the current models. Now, you’d think that with a “slim” model, the price would be to your favor. It isn’t, and it’s kind of ironic when they stated that this was for the holidays. Something you could get for yourself or a relative. This would obviously not get a price cut during the holidays. You know what will though, the current slim. That’s why I’m getting that one instead.

What do you guys think? Is the new PlayStation 3 Super Slim something on your wishlist? Or rather, would you get that one for someone on Christmas? Tell us what your take on the whole super slim topic and hit us up a comment down below.
